The Muslims Want to Destroy Mecca

The destruction of Mecca: Saudi hardliners are wiping out their own heritage,” by , The Independent, 6 August 2005, (from Radio Active Chief through Jim River Report).

A while ago I defending Representative Tancredo’s remarks that the obliteration of Mecca may be a useful deterrent against al Qaeda.

I knew there were Americans who wanted to see destroyed. However, I didn’t know that the Wahabi Muslim anti-Mecca movement is so strong!

Historic Mecca, the cradle of Islam, is being buried in an unprecedented onslaught by religious zealots.

Almost all of the rich and multi-layered history of the holy city is gone. The Washington-based Gulf Institute estimates that 95 per cent of millennium-old buildings have been demolished in the past two decades.

Now the actual birthplace of the Prophet Mohamed is facing the bulldozers, with the connivance of Saudi religious authorities whose hardline interpretation of Islam is compelling them to wipe out their own heritage.

Many commentators call Mecca “the most holy city in .” The Wahabis would call that idolatry. And kill anyone who believes that.

The driving force behind the demolition campaign that has transformed these cities is Wahhabism. This, the austere state faith of Saudi Arabia, was imported by the al-Saud tribal chieftains when they conquered the region in the 1920s.

The motive behind the destruction is the Wahhabists’ fanatical fear that places of historical and religious interest could give rise to idolatry or polytheism, the worship of multiple and potentially equal gods.

The practice of idolatry in Saudi Arabia remains, in principle at least, punishable by beheading. This same literalism mandates that advertising posters can and need to be altered. The walls of Jeddah are adorned with ads featuring people deliberately missing an eye or with a foot painted over. These contrived imperfections are the most glaring sign of an orthodoxy that tolerates nothing which fosters adulation of the graven image. Nothing can, or can be seen to, interfere with a person’s devotion to Allah.

If the Saudi Wahabis treat their own history like that, what hope is there for the Shia of Saudi-Occupied East Arabia?

  1. Strange… when I went to this morning, to get the trackback URL I had to go to a second page that was very plain. I thought of writing you commenting on the strange design decision! But now I don't see how I did that at all…

Perhaps a kink in the software? Oh well.. hopefully it works now! 🙂

    Thanks for the note!

  2. unfortunately we have let Wahabis highjack out islam and devoid it of its heart and soul. They have invested and inspired a bunch of loonies all over the world. Look what the Taliban did in Afghanistan not only with the culture but with the destruction of the giant Buddhas. There is NO buddists living in Afghanistan for a least 200 years (thanks partially to us, musulmans). There was absolutely no reason to destroy those amazing art pieces.

  3. I don't find the Taliban's destruction of “idols” terrible as such — certainly the US Government found it fit to destroy the worship areas of the National Reich Church and State Shinto.

The Taliban's habit of hosting terrorists disturbed me far more.

However, it would be interesting to take a look at how art-destruction correlates to life-destruction.

  4. The Taliban destroyed the idol for two reasons.

Reason one, commonly reported by the media, was because the Taliban followed the Koran's teaching of not making images of man and felt it was their duty to destroy the idols.

Reason two was because the Taliban tired to erase the “jahiliyya” Afghanistan. Jahiliyya in Arabic means ignorance and is used to describe the period of time before Muslims conquered a land. Art is a product of culture; therefore the Taliban reasoned an all out war against non-Muslim cultures would aide them in riding the rest of Afghanistan of non-Muslims and their culture.

  5. The destruction of the Giant Buddhas was not just erasing a couple of art pieces but rather erasing a large part of a nation's history and culture. Anyone who has been on the receiving end of such cultural genocide knows that erasing an era of their history is as painful as killing of its inhabitants. I find it shocking that some people does not find it disturbing.

  6. Matin,

Welcome back. The destruction of the buddhas was disturbing. But it was not senseless. Our enemies are not mindless — they know what they are doing. That makes them dangerous.

I'm not sure how you are measuring pain, but lost lives generally worry me more than lost statues.

  7. This would seem to suggest the most effective tactic might- far from threatening to destroy Mecca- be to tie the destruction that's already happening to Al Qaeda's allies.

  8. Reminders of past ages where there was glory and culture, is always threatening of those who are currently trying to lead a nation, that is why they destroy them. Oh well…as Muslims we should not really mourn the loss of them, but it was a magnificant sight..
