A History of Music on Video: the Bands referenced in "Dani California" by RHCP (with lyrics)

,” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stadium Arcade, 2 May 2006, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ENV2P0/102-4292267-8637755?v=glance&n=5174 (learn more, read the lyrics, watch the video).

Dani Calfornia is a striking music video. In it the Red Hot Chili Peppers pay homage to the bands and styles that have come before them. While previous music videos have spoofed earlier and even contemporary performers — I’m thinking of the Beatles in Outkast’s Hey Ya! and Britney Spears in Weezer’s Perfect Situation — they tend to be humorous. Dani California is not. Directed by Tony Kaye (who also did American History X), DC shows a band’s love of music.

This post is a shout out to RHCP in turn, praising the band’s work and the work of those who have gone before.

Watching the video several times, there are clearly only ten variations in the video. For reasons I don’t know, Wikipedia claims there are eleven. Specifically, Iggy Pop would appear between Gary Glitter and The Misfits. I’ll update this page if I’m wrong on any of the bands, but (unless they appear simultaneously, or there are multiple versions of the video) I do not see where I am wrong.
