Last of the paperwork (?)
by tdaxp ~ July 18th, 2007
Lady of tdaxp and I visited our lawyer today, to sign some final papers are send off our applications (for family reunification and change-of-status). We had spent the last month or so getting this and that piece of paperwork (including a marriage license!)
Today we signed a number of things, including an affidavit where Lady of tdaxp “unreservedly renounced” her membership in the Chinese Communist Party, and her prior memberships in the (Communist Party-affiliated) Youth and Pioneer Leagues. Then we went to Walgreen’s to get passport photos.
We had to write two checks out to D.H.S. It felt like being gypped out of a PlayStation 3, but our attorney said that DHS is actually pretty efficient (I believe it), so hopefully things will go smoothly.
If all goes well, nothing in the application packets will be lost, the paperwork will travel from the Chicago “lock box” to down in Missouri somewhere to finally Omaha, we’ll have an easy interview, and like magic — my wife and I can stay together!

Dan,
“Today we signed a number of things, including an affidavit where Lady of tdaxp “unreservedly renounced” her membership in the Chinese Communist Party, and her prior memberships in the (Communist Party-affiliated) Youth and Pioneer Leagues.”
Is that going to sabotage any possible future visits to China?
Brendan,

Agreed! We're waiting for the falcon to come out and the elite price break.
Nonetheless, a “not worth it” [1] 80 gig PS3 is sitting on some DHS desk now…

Adrian — Thanks!
Jeffrey — Thanks for your concern. At no time in our travels was there any check of party membership, or different services offered to party members. Where there were different levels of service (medical care [1], train travel [2]), etc, money was the decisive factor.
A bigger decision, down the line, would be naturalization. If she decides to do this, she would forfeit her Chinese citizenship, forcing her to get a “returning Chinese” visa to visit (except for international areas like Hainan, Hong Kong, and Macao). However, at the same time that would actually allow her to stay in China for an extended period without having to forfeit her permanent residency — so it's a complicated call.

Good luck. Our stuff was 'lost' in Missouri. Had to start all over…

Isaac –
Scary! Fortunately, besides keeping a “firm copy” of everything we went, our attorney also has original copies of all the signed forms…..
Still, our fingers are crossed!
