Nope.
I lost faith in Taiwan’s system when CSB got re-elected. The whole point of democracy in my mind is to dump corrupt, incompetent and racially divisive ethnofascist jackasses like CSB. Stirring up racial hatred is not an acceptable way to win votes no matter how many time you use the word “democracy”.
Taiwan is an embarrassment to civilized democracies.

The argument is that the US position on Taiwan is analogous to the US position in California immediately after the Mexican-American War… the previous sovereign renounced all claims, and the US became the military occupier.

Where history diverges, of course, is that the US soon asserted sovereignty over California, while we were mute while the National Revolutionary Army [1] arrived.

Both the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic assert that, upon Japan’s renunciation of Taiwan, sovereignty “recessed” to the legal successor (the Republic of China) of previous sovereign (“China Proper” [2], a constituent state of the Empire of the Great Qing).

There are two logical attacks against the ROC/PRC position. First, other states do not recognize the right of recession. Second, many (including early Chinese nationalists) did not grant the Qing Dynasty legitimacy as sovereign of China Proper, while recognizing their sovereignty over China Proper.

I have heard a similar argument, and it would make sense.

I am not sure how much that changes anything, but it is an interesting case of a friendly government existing (1) in exile (2) on American territory.

The lawsuit is based on the 1952 San Francisco Peace Treaty when Japan renounced all claims to Formosa and the Pescadores Islands. According to the complaint, the United States “is and remains the ‘principal occupying power’ of Taiwan under SFPT Article 23(a).” The complaint traces the history of Taiwan from the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki when feudal China surrendered Taiwan to Japan. The lawsuit notes General Order No. 1 where General Douglas McArthur instructed the Japanese on Formosa to surrender to Republic of China troops.

“The surrender and repatriation of the Japanese forces in Taiwan (Formosa) was carried out with substantial assistance of the United States armed forces.”

The suit then cites the Japanese cessation of Taiwan in 1952 with the San Francisco Peace Treaty and notes that the Republic of China was not a party to the treaty.

“From 1945 to the present, Taiwan has been an occupied territory of the United States, ‘the principal occupying Power.’ Currently Taiwan is an occupied territory of the United States, and Taiwan’s statehood status is disputed and uncertain.
