Islamists, Europeans, and Free Speech

Last year, Network Solutions (a hosting company that caused Chet trouble on an unrelated problem) yanked the website of Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, who produced a movie entitled “Fitnah” to protest the murder of the director of the movie “Submission” Both “Fitna” and “Submission” focus on perceived mistreatment of women in Islam.

Britain yesterday decided that avoiding another terrorist strike was more important that free speech or even Continental Unity (as Mr. Wilders is a Parliamentarian in a fellow EU member state). Wilders’ response is typical of his bravery and showmanship:

“I’ll see what happens at the border,” Geert Wilders told Radio Netherlands on Wednesday. “Let them put me in handcuffs.”

The right-wing lawmaker was invited by a member of Parliament to show his anti-Islam movie “Fitna,” which calls the Koran a “fascist” book and accuses Islam of being a violent religion. He was told by the British Embassy in a letter Tuesday that he could not set foot in the country.

Previous attempts to show the film, in the real world and online, have been met with death threats and self-censorship. In the U.K., making the film is cause for expulsion from the country.

My hat off to Mr. Wilders, and other defenders of intellectual freedom everywhere.

Update: Geert Wilders has been denied entry at Heathrow Airport, and was then detained.

Update 2: More on the retreat of free-speech in Europe, from The Economist.

  1. You know you’re a decedent society when you persecute the people trying to defend you? Its very sad watching the birth place of our civilization being Caliphated, but even more disturbing when you realize that Europe’s elites are implicit in it.

Of course we hear nothing from America’s political class about this? We hear about “human rights abuses” all the time in Africa, the MIddle East , or South America but the denying of free speech in Europe is accepted (or even encouraged).

This is why I predict similar laws being implemented in the US. By the end of Obama’s time in office, I predict that “hate-speech” laws will be implemented. The implementation of these laws will come after a campaign of media created “hate attacks” on non-whites. Once you start seeing a lot of news stories about “attacks” on non-whites, you’ll know “hate-speech” laws are on the way. These “attacks” don’t even have to be real (Just like the Duke rape hoax). They just have to scare people that their “children are in danger” of the 4th Reich; which will be upon us at any moment! The right wing will go along with it too. Bill O’Reily will talk about “left-wing bomb throwers” and talk about the evil “Internets.”

The establishment realizes that multi-ethnic States have a history of instability and in order to maintain elite status will utilize police state methods. The only thing we can do about is accept it and find a place in the machine to survive. Find a place where you help the elites maintain and increase power and you should be safe? The elites need people to help them maintain the power arrangement, so its best to be useful in this regard.

The more useful you are at oppressing un-politically correct Americans the more free you’ll be.

  2. It may be too much, to say that the angry young men who want to stop us from making cartoons, criticizing(in the higher sense) their faith, and reading their books [1] want a caliphate . It is giving them too much credit, I think

What’s the difference between Britain and Venezuela, by the way? European critics of government policies can visit Venezuela. [2]

  3. not sure of the point you’re making re chavez: the article seemed to say that he would permit walesa’s visit ‘after’ he cancelled the travel plan.
the dif between GB and venezuela is this: one is a third-world sh*thole run by a 3rd-rate dictator, the other was once a world-spanning empire that contributed uncountable riches to the western tradition.

  4. “This is why I predict similar laws being implemented in the US. By the end of Obama’s time in office, I predict that “hate-speech” laws will be implemented.”

Are you implying that Obama would be the catalyst of such laws? I mean, I remember Obama pointing to Don Imus’ constitutional rights during his “nappy-headed hos” comment.

I may not be jingoistic when it comes to most things, but I do not shy away from saying that America does have the purest understanding of what freedom of speech is and it is an agreed consensus across the American political spectrum, and I doubt the European left will hold much sway over the American left any time soon.

  5. There are numerous structural difficulties between Venezuela and Britain that make Britain a better place to live. However, in this case Chavez was shamed into allowing a political enemy into Venezuela. Gordon Brown, so far, has not been.

On the “Fairness Doctrine” (in which conservative outlets such as AM talk radio would need to subsidize liberal talk show hosts, but liberal outlets such as NPR would not need to subsidize conservative talk show hosts), the Congressional Democrats support it [1] and Obama does not [2]. I could see a similar dynamic happening with speech codes more generally, especially if it’s on the internet / “for the children”.

  6. The best thing about the British accent, is that the youtube video is both hilarious and sophisticated!

I’m not sure what ‘afraid to criticize’ comment he was referring to, but there was a similar one in America [1]

HH: Would you say the same things about Mohammed as you just said about Joseph Smith?

LO’D: Oh, well, I’m afraid of what the…that’s where I’m really afraid. I would like to criticize Islam much more than I do publicly, but I’m afraid for my life if I do.

Comedy Central is also an enabler, of course. [2]

For my part, I’ve been sued by a lawyer! So between lawyers and Muslims, we have our hands full!
